Here are my top-5 players to be on the lookout for come the start of The Open Championship at Carnoustie tomorrow:
5. Sergio Garcia:
Although he has had a down period in his play for a portion of this season, Garcia has finished T12 (Italy) and T8 (France) in his last 2 starts. Garcia loves to play in the British Open, as he has 10 top-10 finishes including 2 runner-ups. Look for him to kick start his game back to where we are used to seeing it come tomorrow.
4. Tommy Fleetwood:
Fleetwood, who owns the course record at Carnoustie (63), fiends for the Dunhill Links as he is 7-7 when competing at them. As well as an impressive solo second place finish at the U.S. Open, expect Fleetwood to step up with the spotlight put on the Carnoustie record holder.
3. Rickie Fowler:
Can he FINALLY win his first major?? He's certainly well prepared. Fowler is 7-8 with two top-5 finishes at The Open. Tack on three top-5's and another three top-25's in his last six majors, he has the tools for what it takes to take home the coveted Claret Jug.
2. Justin Rose:
Rose seems to be in contention every single championship he plays in, he has accumulated 4 wins in his 19 starts worldwide. He is ranked seventh in strokes gained: putting, which will be a true test for whoever comes out victorious by the end of the week.
1. Dustin Johnson:
As the World's #1, DJ is the betting favorite for The Open. He has already stated he is going to let the big dog eat this week, and hope his driver can land him his 2nd major title. Well rested, considering he has been off since the U.S. Open, Johnson's accuracy with the driver should make him lethal and open our eye's to driving distances that are unheard of.
