Francesco Molinari put on an absolute clinic during he Quicken Loans National at TPC Potomac to capture his first PGA Tour victory. His 21-under performance beat runner-up Ryan Armor by 8 strokes.
Only DJ (Dustin Johnson) has won an event (Sentry Tournament of Champions) by at least 8 strokes during this season. That just goes to show the type of dominance Molinari was portraying all over the course throughout the week.
Molinari tied the course record on Sunday shooting an 8-under 62 and he had a chance to shoot the course record but missed his birdie putt on 18.
To put into perspective how spectacular Molinari played this past week at one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour, he only had 2 bogeys in 72 holes. Displaying his ball-striking abilities, Molinari shot 62 of 72 greens in regulation for the tournament.
Molinari came into the tournament ranked 123rd in the FedEx Cup standings, and with the win moved up to 42nd.
Tiger's decision to switch putters from his tried and true Scotty Cameron to the mallet bladed TaylorMade Ardmore 3 seemed to have paid off. During the final round yesterday, Tiger seemed very relaxed and confident with the flat stick.
Woods was expected to finish strong, as this field was one of the weakest of any Tour event all season. So, his T4 finish is reassuring as parts of his game are where they need to be.
Although, the 'tweener putts that you and I seem to overthink every time, had Tiger scratching his head as well. Brandell Chamblee from Golf Channel had this to say about Tiger's putting:
Tiger is dead last inside 10 feet this week, missing thus far 13 putts from within that distance and is currently in 6th place. Molinari by contrast has missed just five putts inside ten feet all week. Eight shots separates the two. pic.twitter.com/F7xE68FOsU— Brandel Chamblee (@chambleebrandel) July 1, 2018
Definitely an improvement from Tiger ranking 7th overall all week in shots gained: putting but, still some work to do considering he missed 13 putts inside 10 feet which ranked last out of all players that made the cut.
As the tournament host, Tiger and Molinari chatted post round as Woods congratulated the Italian on his victory. "It was just joking and asking me what I had for dinner last night and I told him it was pasta, pasta is the secret," Molinari stated with a big grin on his face.
