Tiger. Phil. 18 Hole Deathmatch.
All on the line for a winner-take-all with a grand prize of $10 million. I mean, what an event this would be. Must see TV for sure.
According to a Golf.com report, the match was originally supposed to be scheduled for July 3rd, with reports indicating it would have taken place at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas.
“We’re working on a different date,” Mickelson told the website. “I thought it was done for the 3rd, but obviously it wasn’t.”
Perhaps Tiger wanted to focus more on drilling cups on the beer pong table than the golf course, but we need this event. Tiger and Phil have always had a funny relationship with one another. But putting two of the generation's best in a head-to-head match is such an awesome idea.
We don't get to see the top dogs go at it in this sense necessarily as much as the golf community would like to. So as soon as more details come out as to when this will come to full fruition, there's going to be quite some hype behind the event.
For the most part, Phil and his crew have done the talking for the event. Tiger and his gang have declined to comment about it at the moment.
The idea of this came about after Tiger and Phil had a practice round together at the Master's, as well as some friendly banter during The Players. They were paired together that week and lefty had this to say:
“The excitement that’s been going on around here, it gets me thinking: Why don’t we just bypass all the ancillary stuff of a tournament and just go head-to-head and just have some kind of a high-stakes, winner-take-all match? Now, I don’t know if he wants a piece of me, but I just think it would be something that would be really fun for us to do, and I think there would be a lot of interest in it if we just went straight to the final round.”
With no shame just calling out Tiger! I love it. Phil has always been the second-hand man behind Tiger so you know he REALLY wants this to go down.
The Golf.com report also stated that the two agreed to wearing microphones during the match so this will be awesome to hear the chirps going on back and forth between them.
With $10 million on the line, “It’s a ridiculous amount of money,” Mickelson said. “No matter how much money you have, this amount will take both of us out of our comfort zone.”
